NORTHERN BC WILDERNESS IS NOT TOURIST COUNTRY
BUT IS OUTSTANDING FOR THE TRUE EXPLORER
North and North Central BC: the most remote terrain in British Columbia

Northern BC has the most remote terrain in the province with most of the region accessible only by floatplane or helicopter. However, increasing logging and mining activity has extended roads into many areas. A placer gold mine west of the tiny town of Telegraph Creek provides access into the Stikine Valley and rugged northern coast range mountains. Jade is found near Dease Lake at Boulder Creek and an underground gold mine lies secluded north of Telegraph Creek. Waterfalls, the Grand Canyon of the Stikine and the spectacular and unique world class Mt Edziza Park and it's Spectrum Range are accessed by air from the roads we travel.

The most remote backroads network in North America is found in the Omenica region north of Prince George and offers hundreds of kilometres of backroads accessing working logging camps, mineral exploration properties, outfitters and remote native towns. Gold, silver and mercury mines and prospects provide a focus to much of the history of the region. Active gold placer mining at Manson Creek illustrate a remote existence for the miners that is reminiscent of the turn of the century. Generations of wildfires are encountered in the area showing various stages of natural regeneration supporting rich biodiversity.

Northern BC is not for the faint of heart. It is one of the few GeoQwest trips that requires camping. There are long distances involved and no tourist support. It requires a knowledge of the region, a professional relationship with the companies working in the area and a sensitivity to local culture to truly experience the area. Your GeoQwest host has worked throughout this region and can provide an insight unlike any offered to visitors to the province.

GeoQwest's favourite area...especially in the Autumn.

The Chilcotin Plateau is host to an extensive network of logging and forest access roads. The terrain is rolling with abundant stands of pine, fir, spruce, aspen and birch and has provided decades of productive forest harvest. The regenerated deciduous species from logging and natural wildfire provide vivid colour landscapes in the cool of the autumn. The western backdrop of the snowcapped Coast Mountain complex provides spectacular photo opportunities. Wildlife is abundant and encounters are frequent with opportunities for spotting elusive animal species such as wolf and cougar. Bighorn sheep and black bear are abundant. Grizzly bears can be common. Over the past 20 year a number of outstanding wilderness lodges and resorts have been built across the region providing exemplary accommodation.

The Blackwater area northward to Prince George offers rich forests, rivers and wildlife. A number of outfitters operate in this region testifying to the world class moose, bear and deer found in the region. Barkerville is well known as a tourist stop for tour busses and individuals looking for the golden history of the region. GeoQwest takes you behind the tourist fronts and shows you the productive claim areas and spectacular scenery of the Bowron Valley and central lakes district east of Quesnel.

Your Geoqwest host spent his youth living and travelling in the Kootenays The Kootenays are one of the most accessible and outstandingly scenic regions. Deep forests, steep mountains, quaint towns and villages rich in Canadian history. Our routes travel some of the most mature, scenic, changeable backroads in the province. Most of the roads are not long in length but offer the most culture per kilometre of any region. An extensive mining and prospecting heritage has left many lost sites to visit. Numerous unique accommodations, artist villages and adventure tourism services exist throughout.

GeoQwest concentrates on less traveled areas like the roads of the Boundary, Granby and other Monashee Range Valleys that offer kilometres of scenery and working backcountry culture. The Arrow Lakes, the historic mining towns of Nelson and Kimberley and the huge zinc smelter in Trail have rich histories that reflect over 100 years of continuous mining history. Forestry and the many lead, zinc, silver and gold mines of the Kootenays have provided an extensive network of roads and trails.

This is just a quick overview of the province and to illustrate that GeoQwest covers British Columbia.
